Roussan Camille

Postum award to Roussan Camille, a diplomat, journalist, poet and humanist was born on August 27, 1912 in Jacmel (Haiti) where he spent his early childhood and schooling which occured during the U.S. occupation of Haiti. He later moved to Port-au-Prince, the capital and began his career in the newspaper of Charles Moravia, Time . Talented journalist , he was appointed the editor of Haiti -Journal newspaper of the Head of State Sténio Vincent ( president from 1930 to 1941). Under the same government , he was appointed shortly after , First Secretary of the Legation of Haiti to Paris .
At 24, Camille visit countries of Europe, where he observes the splendor of bourgeois receptions and harsh conditions of the proletariat. He returned to Haiti in 1940, not without an obligatory stop in time of war , in Casablanca , a city that will inspire him, as it illustrated in one of his masterpiece "Nedje" his most popular, captivating and troubling poem from his first published book, Assault to the night.
Resuming his work as a journalist , Roussan Camille trip to Europe after the war , and the United States where he was invited to cover the organizational meetings of the United Nations in San Francisco, and several large U.S. municipalities. In Port -au- Prince, these are the years boiling point of the Haitian intelligentsia, marked by the passage of various personalities - André Breton , Aimé Césaire, Wilfredo Lam, Jean- Paul Sartre - and camaraderie with peers : Jean Brierre René Piquion , Emile Roumer , Jacques Roumain and Felix Morisseau -Leroy.
Camille occupies positions various ministerial postitions such as the Department of Public Health and Tourism, but he had more passion for his work in Haiti at the- Journal newspaper and then at the National, where he became co-director newspaper.
He became a widow and was appointed by president Estimated Dumarsais in 1946 of the country as Secretary General of the International Exhibition to mark the bicentenary of the city of Port -au- Prince in 1949. Worked as a diplomat and remaried to Laura Trouillot mother of John and Fedora. He later on entertained "bohemian leftists and Cuban South American intellectuals environment and wrote a poem entitled "Havana in 1953 which evokes solidarity with Cuba and the Cuban people. At age 49 , He had traveled the world, Europe, Latin America, Africa, his travels permeates his Humanist poetry coupled with the elegance and sincerity of his heart. his poetry is contended as the committed whistleblower activist. The poet had traveled to European capitals, but it is Africa that drew his inspiration and evokes its past pain and oppression of the fellow man. The slave trade, the triangle, the exploitation of man by man and the marthyrdom of the plantations. Evocative poetry, declamatory, punctuated by shimmering descriptions of stunning images. The national poet Roussan Camille died in Port -au- Prince, December 7, 1961. In the space of forty years his work has been recognized twice. The same year of his departure, he was awarded the Dumarsais Estime Price for his unpublished collection , Multiple presence . According to Jean Claude Boyer from the Nouvelliste, aside from being beautiful and fluid his poem carries a fraternal message , egalitarian and humanism. He is unquestionably, one of the major poet who enriched Haitian litterature in the twentieth century. Through his work he has become immortal and timeless.
