DIASPORA NETWORK

Lakou Association works with the Haitian at two levels.  First it provides services to the Haitian Diaspora by means of support to respond to the community needs and secondly by creating programs that would integrate the Haitian Diaspora in the development of their homeland.

The Haitian Diaspora is a strong network of people from various background residing outside of Haiti.  The great majority of the Diaspora lives primarily in the United States, Latin America, Canada, Europe and the other Caribbean islands and a small group in Africa.

Wherever they may be, their roots are strongly planted in their homeland. They are over 2 millions living outside of Haiti and that group alone compose  70% of Haiti skilled patrimonies. They contribute daily to the development, they are Haiti's first charitable givers, Haitians from the USA alone send 2 billion per year to Haiti.  Which more than triple the International aide disbursement.  These remittances make up a large share of Haiti's Gross National Product (GNP).

While the tourist industry in Haiti has fallen out in the past decades, the Haitian Diaspora remains loyal to his homeland and through remittances alone the money that they send back home is higher than all the aide combine.

Lakou Association Serve as a platform to deepen public understanding of the Haitian Diaspora in the world and in Haiti.

Through the Beyond Mountain Consortium (BMC) program we work on engaging the Diaspora in effective engagement with Haiti.  Along with the BMC proram we provide other means of support to the Diaspora in the communities where they reside and channel them to services in Haiti.

  • Three Steps Program-community advocacies.

  • Volunteer Corps: volunteers from the Haitian Diaspora

  • Haitian Diaspora Outreach Campaign: trust fund from the Diaspora.

  • Embassador Project: Rebranding to change Haiti’s image
